Fish River Canyon

Fifty millions years ago the Fish Rivers started to cut its way through a valley within a canyon in southern Namibia. It still flows through each wet season, its journey continually adding to the masterpiece that is the canyon today.
The beginnings of the canyon started many millions of years prior to the Fish Rivers meandering journey. Five hundred million years ago the canyon began to form when a fracture in the earth formed a broad valley, deepened by the moving glaciers of an ice age. Further faults and erosion created canyons within canyons.
The Fish River Canyon is considered to be the second- largest canyon in the world. At 161 kilometre’s long, 27 kilometre’s wide and 550 metres deep, it is second in size to the Grand Canyon in Arizona, USA.
