Etosha National Park

The name Etosha means “great white place”, referring to the Etosha Pan, which covers the greater part of the eastern half of the park, accessible to tourists. The park was declared in 1907 and covers an area of 22 270 km2, being home to 114 mammal species, 340 birds species, 110 reptile species and 16 species of amphibians. The Etosha Pan itself is part of the Kalahari Basin, the floor of which was formed around 1 000 million years ago. Today the Etosha Pan only fills up during years which have a good rainy season, but water usually dries up within a few week.
